Principal's Message

Good morning, good morning, good morning, Dos Rios Rocket Families,

Can you believe we are almost done with the first quarter of the 2017-2018 school year. For those of you I have not met yet, my name is Mrs. Annamarie Dowling-Garrott (Mrs. A or Mrs. D-G for short). I am so excited to be the new principal of Dos Rios Elementary. I have been in education for 20 years as a teacher and administrator in the Chicago-land area. The majority of my career has been spent in high needs schools and I want to tell you that is where my heart is.  I have a strong passion and background working with students and families to persevere through adversity and strive for excellence, both in and out of the classroom.

Many of you know our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Leticia Castro, who served as the District's ELL Coach last year.  Together, Mrs. Castro and I are ready to work with you, our students, our community and our staff to lead Dos Rios into new, engaging, rigorous and exciting educational opportunities.

We hope the start of school has gone well for you and your student.  We know that with change and transition comes challenges or bumps in the road.  At Dos Rios, we are committed however to use every bump as a stepping stone rather than see it as a stumbling block. We commit to strive to foster a culture of learning through the core subjects, arts, technology and engaging classrooms. Our goal at Dos Rios is to begin a journey together as students, staff and families, and maintain that over the years.

This year at Dos Rios, our two primary goals are in the areas of Student Achievement and School Climate.  We have begun intense academic professional development to increase teacher capacity and student learning. Every day we read in the “Kids At Hope” pledge that our “children are capable of success. No exceptions!”  We know that our students are capable of making significant academic gains and it’s through the incredible efforts of our amazing teaching staff that we can collectively achieve that goal.

The other primary goal is in regards to School Climate.  I believe, “You can’t have a child’s mind until you have their heart.”  This is the phrase that will drive our school climate and behavior program to improve student-teacher relationships and overall student behavior. As the district as a whole transitions to PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) we have modified our behavioral program at Dos to support this transition and focus on the Positive Behavioral Interventions rather than the punitive.  Research and best-practices show that focusing on Positive Behavioral Interventions increases lasting change in behavior and opens the door for building positive teacher-student relationships, positive parent-school relationships and positive student-community relationships.  In this area as well, we are increasing teacher knowledge and practice in Social Emotional Learning.

Union ESD believes that strong community-school relationships are crucial to academic success.
This coming year, we know that with even more parent involvement, our school can offer the experiences that will make us an outstanding school. We appreciate your commitment that will help ensure every student will learn to their full potential in all classes. I am prepared to offer time and support as needed to make this a reality for all. We ask for your support and participation in this effort by sending your child to school every day, encouraging your child to read for pleasure daily, communicating with your child’s teacher, monitoring homework and progress, and asking them to share what they learned each day at school.

Parent/Teacher conferences are beginning the week of October 9th.  At Dos, we are about giving 100%.  Let’s aim for 100% parent participation in conferences. Mrs. Castro and I would love to meet you. Please make sure that you are scheduled with your child’s teacher(s).  We look forward to continuing the work that has already begun and together, as we support the Dos Rios community, we can soar to new heights.

Principally yours,

Mrs. Annamarie Dowling-Garrott
